Abstract<\/strong><\/h3>\n
5\u00b716 Plaza, which was built as a massive plaza made of asphalt in 1971, waschanged into Yeouido Public Park recently. This study attempts to examine howthis peculiar Plaza was created and how it could be changed into the public park. The previous studies tried to explain it by means of the logic of space or the behaviorsof political leaders, but they did not succeed. This paper intends to approachthis issue from the perspective of spatial sociology focusing on the relationship betweenspace and society. The results from this study are as follows:The making of 5\u00b716 Plaza was influenced by many factors such as the quasi-warsituation in Korean peninsula, modernization, but the regime competition betweenSouth and North Korea was the decisive factor. The intervention of the strong statebased on the authoritarian regime was added to this. As a result, 5\u00b716 Plaza wasbuilt and utilized as a \u2018state plaza\u2019 where the large-scale mobilization of massesand the parade of national power took place. But as the civil society had further influences to the state owing to the socio-politicalchange in 1980s, the name of 5\u00b716 Plaza was changed into Yeouido Plaza andits characteristics as a \u2018citizens\u2019 plaza\u2019 strengthened. Furthermore, in 1990sSouth-North relationships improved according to the decomposition of the Cold Warand the local autonomy activated the citizens\u2019 participation in urban politics. Asa result of these changes, the social interests to the plaza decreased and the socio-politicalneeds to the public park increased. Then the local government began to playa leading part in the conversion of the Plaza into a public park. The conflict overthis issue among social forces was intense, but this conversion was completed in1998. But as the process was not led by the citizens, the Public Park did not become a \u2018public park for citizens\u2019. It can be concluded that the transforming process of 5\u00b716 Plaza was more dependentupon the changes of social structure and the power structure in urban politicsrather than the logic of space or the behaviors of political leaders.<\/div>\n
